Generic key to install Windows 10 RTM

RECOMMENDED: Click here to fix Windows errors and optimize system performance

There are often times when you need to install Windows 10 evaluation or testing in a virtual machine like VirtualBox for example. You may not want to activate it every time with your licensed product key that you use on a real machine. For that purpose, you can use generic keys for Windows 10 available from Microsoft, which will allow you to install the OS, but won't allow you to activate it. As long as you have an ISO image or any other bootable media containing Windows Setup files you can install the OS using a generic key.

There is a set of generic keys available for Windows 10 at this moment. These keys are as follows:

  • Windows 10 Home:
  • WIndows 10 Pro:
  • Windows 10 Home Single Language
  • Windows 10 Enterprise:

Remember, these keys can only install Windows for evaluation or testing for a short time. It's not possible to activate it unless you enter a genuine key purchased from Microsoft. Once you decide to activate your installed OS, you will need to change the generic product key to the actual key you purchased. Here is how you do it: How to change product key in Windows 10
That's it.

Well, MS usually don‘t share their RTM builds with public. I guess, we‘ll see next week.

You don’t need to enter a product key when installing Windows 10 build 10240. Durring install when first asked, you can leave the product key blank and click the Skip button. Later, when install finishes and you get the “It’s time to enter the product key” screen, you can click “Do this later”.
I’ve been running Windows 10 in VirtualBox for about a week without needing a product key. After a few days, you will only be able to change Personalization settings within 1/2 hour after booting. Personalization settings are disabled after that time. But, you can reboot and regain the ability to change Personalization settings for 1/2 hour.
Also, several days after install, a watermark will appear on the lower right of the screen when the computer has been on for 5 or 6 hours. Rebooting will cause the watermark to disappear until 5 or 6 hours later.
